The main idea is to use smokescreen, proc X-Attack, then click Unite move in the large team fights, and finish off low HP enemies with Surf.
With boosts from X-Attack and Smokescreen, Waterburst Shuriken will deal 1.44 times the normal damage. Afterwards, Greninja gets massive buffs from the unite move itself. In addition to 30% increased movement speed, Greninja gets 35% attack speed from unite buffs, and 21% damage buff from Energy Amplifier.
Assuming all damage and attack speed buffs (X-Attack, Energy Amp, Unite Buffs), Greninja deals 2.45 times the normal damage with basic attacks, and the increased attack speed will also reduce the cooldown on surf very quickly. This is not even mentioning the colossal crit rate Greninja has at 49.6%. This is because it actually gets two chances to crit in melee range, one for the attack and another for the missing HP portion, each having a 29% to crit. Keep in mind that crits do 175% the normal attack damage.
However, power isn't everything. This build requires one to have good team support, as Greninja is the frailest Pokemon in the game, and needs teammates that can take hits on its behalf, especially with the absence of full heal on this build. Also, Greninja without unite move tends to be weaker, as the build has a dependence on energy amp and unite move for its damage output.
The gameplan for this build is to get unite move up and to nuke to opposition in pivotal team fights. This build should be played in jungle, as the items are not very beneficial early game outside of muscle band, and there is much more farm in jungle to get unite move back up, jungle buffs, and exp for smokescreen+.
Rapid Fire Scarf and Full Heal can be subbed for Energy Amp and X-Attack for those who want a better early game, better escape potential, and less dependence on unite move in sacrifice for a less powerful late game, and a stronger and more often Waterburst Nuke.
Other items are not recommended. Stacking is too difficult for Greninja, charging charm is outclassed by both amp and rapid fire scarf, and focus band is too much damage output sacrificed and Greninja gets OHKOed by the powerful burst damage and disables in the current metagame even with focus band anyways.
