The goal behind this strategy is to score enough goals and stack up your sp attacks to increase your choice specs damage
The items helping you get there are wise glasses, choice specs and special attack specs. Wise glasses just gives a flat increase to your special attack so it's not needed to make this strategy work but it'll help do some good damage if you fail to get the combo to work. Next we got Choice specs this item increases the damage of special moves and depending on how high your special attack is the more the damage would increase. gLastly we have special attack specs or sp atk specs for short this item increases your special attack every time you score a goal however This effect can stack up to 6 times.
Choice specs paired with sp atk specs (you know what let's just call it Double Specs) works super well for special attacking nukers like gengar most especially gengar's hex + sludge bomb and yeah I'm a shadow ball + dream eater stan but you could use any move for this build its just that hex is much more suited for suicide nuking
